  • “My brother has complex communication needs, and ‘just once’ is something he often says—usually when we’re encouraging him to try something new. Whether it’s going to camp, trying a new activity, or starting a job program, he may say it a bit hesitantly—but he almost always gives it a try.

Over time, I’ve come to understand that ‘just once’ means: this feels hard or even a little scary, but I’m willing to try in my own way.

As parents and providers, isn’t that what we hope for? That our children can express themselves, be understood, and feel supported enough to try new experiences that bring meaning and joy to their lives.”
